Cult Of Luna To Release Unique Cover of Refused's "Tannhäuser / Derive" for Tribute Album Marking 25th Anniversary of "The Shape Of Punk To Come"
Cult Of Luna is set to release their cover of Refused's "Tannhäuser / Derive" on November 8, 2024, as part of the tribute album "The Shape Of Punk To Come Obliterated" via Epitaph Records. The Swedish post-metal band has extended the original 8-minute track to a 10-minute rendition, infusing it with their signature vast and crushing sound.
Johannes Persson, guitarist and vocalist of Cult Of Luna, emphasized the importance of adding their own creative mark to the cover rather than simply replicating the original. The band's reinterpretation reflects their post-metal style, resulting in a significantly different version from Refused's original composition.
This cover holds special significance for Cult Of Luna, as both they and Refused hail from Umeå, Sweden. The track is part of a tribute album celebrating the 25th anniversary of Refused's influential album "The Shape Of Punk To Come." Cult Of Luna, who formed in 1998—the same year Refused released their seminal album—expressed honor in covering a song by a band they grew up admiring.
While Cult Of Luna is not touring in support of this specific release, the track is part of the broader context surrounding Refused's farewell tour in 2025. Refused will be embarking on a North American tour with Quicksand as support, starting March 21 in Brooklyn, NY, and concluding April 10 in Sacramento, CA. The tour includes stops in major cities such as Toronto, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Vancouver.
