Deafheaven Releases "Heathen," Second Single From Upcoming Album "Lonely People With Power"
Deafheaven, the San Francisco-based post-metal band, has unveiled their latest single "Heathen," the second release from their forthcoming album "Lonely People With Power." The track, which dropped on February 25, 2025, masterfully weaves the band's signature sound with profound explorations of isolation, self-destruction, and spiritual emptiness.
"Lonely People With Power," set for release on March 28, 2025, via Roadrunner Records, promises to be one of Deafheaven's most diverse and ambitious albums to date. Recorded with producer Justin Meldal-Johnsen and mixed by Zach Weeks of GodCity Studio, the album features guest vocal contributions from Jae Matthews of Boy Harsher and Paul Banks of Interpol.
Formed in 2010 by vocalist George Clarke and guitarist Kerry McCoy, Deafheaven has consistently pushed the boundaries of metal, blending elements of black metal, shoegaze, and post-rock. The band's lineup has expanded over the years to include guitarist Shiv Mehra, bassist Christopher Johnson, and drummer Daniel Tracy.
"Heathen" showcases Deafheaven's evolving sound, opening with majestic guitar arpeggios and clean vocals from Clarke, reminiscent of their 2021 album "Infinite Granite." The track then transitions into more intense, metallic sections featuring harsh vocals, though notably less aggressive than their earlier work. This stylistic blend reflects the band's ongoing evolution, balancing their black metal roots with more melodic, post-punk, and dream-pop elements.
The new album follows Deafheaven's critically acclaimed discography, including their groundbreaking 2013 release "Sunbather," which earned spots on Rolling Stone's '100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time' and Pitchfork's '200 Best Albums of the 2010s'. Their 2018 album "Ordinary Corrupt Human Love" garnered the band their first Grammy nomination in the "Best Metal Performance" category.
Deafheaven's first single from the new album, "Magnolia," was released in January 2025, accompanied by a music video directed by Sean Stout and Chelsea Jade. Both "Magnolia" and "Heathen" are available on all major streaming platforms.
To support the release of "Lonely People With Power," Deafheaven has announced a North American headline tour starting April 19, 2025, in Los Angeles. The tour will feature special guests Gatecreeper and Trauma Ray, and includes stops at major festivals such as Sonic Temple in Columbus, Ohio, and Welcome to Rockville in Daytona Beach, Florida.
As Deafheaven continues to evolve their sound and push genre boundaries, "Heathen" and the upcoming "Lonely People With Power" album stand as testaments to the band's artistic growth and their ability to create emotionally charged, sonically diverse music that resonates with a wide audience.
