Ocean Grove Unveils "SOWHAT1999": A Fresh Nu-Metal Offering from "ODDWORLD"

Australian alternative metal outfit Ocean Grove has released "SOWHAT1999," a standout track from their fourth studio album "ODDWORLD," which hit stores today, November 22, 2024, via ODDWORLD Records and SharpTone Records.

"SOWHAT1999" showcases Ocean Grove's evolution within the nu-metal genre, blending rock-influenced nu-metal with a Beastie Boys-inspired boom bap-style verse. Drummer and producer Sam Bassal describes it as "a really fresh song" that encapsulates the band's signature sound while pushing into new territory.

The track features Twiggy Hunter on rap vocals, adding a playful and cheeky element to the song's heavy foundation. Bassal explains, "It's a staple Ocean Grove nu-metal song. It's upbeat, it's fun, but it's still got that heavy element to it."

Lyrically, "SOWHAT1999" explores themes of nostalgia and rebellion, with references to late '90s pop culture woven throughout the verses. The chorus, with its anthemic "So what?" refrain, embodies the band's defiant attitude and encourages listeners to embrace their individuality.

The music video for "SOWHAT1999," directed by Thomas Elliott, features the band performing in a neon-lit, graffiti-covered warehouse, interspersed with scenes that pay homage to iconic '90s music videos and movies.

"SOWHAT1999" is the ninth track on "ODDWORLD," an album that Bassal describes as "traversing the entirety of Ocean Grove's sonic universe." The song's placement near the end of the record highlights its significance in the album's overall narrative.

As Ocean Grove celebrates the release of "ODDWORLD," "SOWHAT1999" stands as a powerful representation of the band's ability to honor their nu-metal roots while continually pushing the boundaries of their sound.
