Saor Unveils Track "Rebirth" From Latest Album "Amidst the Ruins"
Saor, the atmospheric black metal project led by Scottish musician Andy Marshall, has released a new track titled "Rebirth" as part of their latest album "Amidst the Ruins," which came out on February 7, 2025, via Season of Mist. This 14-minute epic serves as the closing track of the album, showcasing Saor's signature blend of atmospheric black metal and Celtic folk influences.
"Rebirth" exemplifies Saor's ability to create cinematic and expansive soundscapes. The song features a mix of harsh black metal elements, including blast beats and Marshall's raw vocals, alongside melodic folk instrumentation such as tin whistles and bagpipes. This combination creates a dynamic journey through various musical landscapes, reflecting the band's deep connection to Scottish heritage and nature.
"Amidst the Ruins" marks Saor's sixth full-length album since their formation in 2013. The album consists of five lengthy compositions, each exploring themes of Scottish history, landscapes, and cultural heritage. Alongside "Rebirth," the album includes other notable tracks such as "The Sylvan Embrace," which features a collaboration with acclaimed cellist Jo Quail, adding another layer of depth to Saor's already rich sound.
Saor's musical background is deeply rooted in the fusion of atmospheric black metal with traditional Scottish and Celtic folk music. Andy Marshall, the sole permanent member of Saor, draws inspiration from the Scottish Highlands, its history, and folklore to create a unique sound that he has dubbed "Caledonian metal". This approach has allowed Saor to carve out a distinct niche within the metal scene, appealing to fans of both extreme metal and folk music.
Throughout their career, Saor has consistently evolved their sound while maintaining their core identity. Their previous album, "Origins," released in 2022, saw the band experimenting with more traditional heavy metal elements. However, "Amidst the Ruins" appears to be a return to their earlier, more atmospheric and folk-influenced style.
As Saor continues to gain recognition in the metal community, they have announced several live performances to support the release of "Amidst the Ruins." These include appearances at festivals such as the Dark Easter Metal Meeting in Munich and the Ragnarök Festival in Lichtenfels, Germany.
